Let us share a case of patchy hair loss or alopecia areata. This young boy from Lucknow visited our centre. There were many bald patches on the scalp and a few on the body since 2017. A giant patch was about 5-6 CM long over the scalp’s right side. He tried to hide the patches with growing long hairs, but the patch size was so large that it was visible.
Alopecia areata is a patchy hair loss of the scalp causing lots of social anxiety. This disorder is supposed to be autoimmune with no definite cause. Alopecia areata is an umbrella term encompassing several variants, including alopecia areata totalis or universalis, ophiasis, ophiasis inversus, and diffuse alopecia areata.
Characteristic “exclamation hairs” may be observed, particularly at the periphery of bald patches. An exclamation point hair is a broken strand with a relatively thick distal portion and a thin proximal portion as it enters the scalp. They result from anagen arrest and cessation of hair shaft formation, with weakening and tapering of the shaft.
This patient has been facing this issue since 2017 and tried various treatments without any results. Finally, he tried homoeopathy and reached out to us. Dr Ravi showed him a few real-time cases on the computer to boost his confidence.
