Haemorrhoids, commonly known as piles, are due to swollen blood vessels in or around the anus and rectum. The haemorrhoidal veins are located in the lowest part of the rectum and the anus. When passing the stool, they may get pushed out, but returns automatically to its place afterwards without an aid. GRADE THREE This type of haemorrhoids are often called ‘prolapsed haemorrhoids ‘;(like a bunch of grape) these appear outside the anus. The patient may feel them hanging out. This bunch must be pushed back manually with the fingers. GRADE FOUR These haemorrhoids get prolapsed – it constantly protrudes and will come out again if pushed back into the rectum. There may or may not be bleeding. Prolapsed haemorrhoids can be painful if the anus strangles them or if a clot develops. They are large and stay outside the anus all the time.
